Uses :

Organic chemicals, dyes (sulfur), intermediates, viscose rayon (sulfur removal), leather (depilatory), paper pulp, hydrometallurgy of gold ores, sulfiding oxidised lead and copper ores preparatory to flotation, sheep dips, photographic reagent, engraving and lithography, analytical reagent.

2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION


2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Corrosive, toxic. Sodium sulfide is a strong base and can cause severe burns on the mucous membrane. Hydrolysis by gastric fluids releases toxic hydrogen sulfide. Ingestion causes swelling, H2S fprmation in the stomach, severe damage to the delicate tissue and danger of perforation. Ingestion of larger amounts may cause defects to central nervous system, dizziness, headache and unconsciousness.

Eye

Causes severe irritation to the eyes. Corrosive. Can cause inflammation, tearing and pain may be expected. Severe contact can cause destruction of tissue.

Skin

Causes severe irritation to the skin. Contact woth skin can produce serious caustic burns with painful inflammation and possible destruction of tissue.

Inhaled

Hazard is highly toxic (50-100 ppm in air) hydrogen sulfide which may accumulate in confined spaces due to the decomposition of sodium sulfide from its reaction with acids. Symptoms include painful conjunctivitis, headache, nausea, dizziness, coughing and, in extreme cases, pulmonary edema and possible death.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

No persistent or cumulative effects have been observed for this material.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

If swallowed, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Give large quantities of water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Seek medical attention immediately.

Eye

Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally. Seek medical attention immediately.

Skin

Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. EWash clothing before re-use and thoroughly clean shoes before re-use. Seek medical attention.

Inhaled

Remove victim from contaminated area immediately. Move to fresh air. If NOT breathing apply artificial resuscitation. Experienced person may administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Seek medical attention.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Material forms toxic hydrogen sulphide in the stomach when swallowed and has a caustic effect. Hydrogen sulphide formed in the atmosphere leads to paralysis of the nervous system. Eye exposure may result in fundoscopic and retinal changes that usually resolve within 72 hours. All eye exposures should have baseline and follow-up fundoscopic evaluation. If exposure is significant, nitrate-induced methemoglobinemia has been advocated as treatment on the basis that methemoglobin bind the toxic hydrosulfide anion, forming sulfmethemoglobin. Inhalaing amyl nitrate or intravenous sodium nitrite is recommended. Do not use thiosulfate.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE


3.1 Exposure Standards

For hydrogen sulfide: -OSHA Permissible Limit (PEL) 10 ppm, 15 ppm (STEL) -ACGIH Threshold Limit Value (TLV) 10 ppm, 15 pp (STEL)

3.2 Engineering Controls

A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures below the Airborne Exposure Limits. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control emissions of contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area.

3.3 Personal Protection

For hydrogen sulfide : If the exposure limit is exceeded, wear a supplied air, full-facepiece respirator, airlined hood, or full-facepiece self-contained breathing apparatus. Acid gas respirator may be used for escape only. This substance has poor warning properties. Skin protection - Wear impervious protective clothing, including boots, gloves, lab coat, apron or overalls, as appropriate, to prevent skin contact. Eye protection - Use chemical safety goggles and/or full face shield where dusting or splashing of solutions is possible. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.

3.4 Flammability

Keep away from heat and ignition sources (NO SMOKING).

4.1 Storage / Transport

Keep container tightly closed, store in a dry, dark area. Keep away from heat sources, acids, oxidising agents, metals. Observe strict hygiene and avoid dust raising. Do not discharge the waste into the drain.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid dust formation. Wear full protective clothing. Eliminate all sources of ignition (NO SMOKING). Prevent material from entering surface waters, drains and sewers. Knock down/dilute dust cloud with water spray. Contain leaking substance, pump over in suitable containers. Dam up solid spills.

Stop dust cloud by covering with sand/earth. Scoop solid spill into closing containers. Powdered : do not use compressed air for pumping over spills. Carefully collect the spill/leftovers. Leftovers : neutralise with soda (sodium carbonate), take collected spill to manufacturer/competent authority. Clean contaminated surfaces with excess of water.

Disposal

Dispose of in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations at an approved waste disposal facility. Empty containers can be landfilled after cleaning in accordance with all applicable regulations.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Explosive when dry (ie. without water of crystallisation). Rapid heating may cause an explosion. An exothermic reaction occurs with strong acids and oxidising agents. Material is stable at normal conditions, but is sensitive to air. Contact with acids and oxidising agents liberates toxic gases of hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and other sulfur oxides. Avoid contact with acids, oxidising agents, aluminium and zinc. Contact with acids gives off hydrogen sulfide, a toxic and flammable gas that may form explosive mixtures in air. Sealed containers may rupture when heated.

Extinguishing Media

Use water spray to extinguish fires. Use media/equipment appropriate to surrounding fire conditions. Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus.
